Mountain and High Altitude Medicine: Examinations and Consultations

The physical demands of hiking in the mountains, trekking at high altitudes and extended stays at high altitude are often underestimated. The exertion of constantly climbing is accompanied by the altitude-specific stress and dangers added by the decreasing amount of oxygen in the air from the elevation of approximately 2500m upwards.

If you are planning to spend extended amounts of time above the altitude of 2500m, the German Society of Mountain and Expedition Medicine (BexMed) recommends an altitude-medicine check-up with a trained mountain and altitude medical doctor. By doing this, you minimize the risk of doing damage to your health during your extended stay at high altitude.

Patients with chronic illnesses and/or those who take medication regularly, people who are planning stays at high altitudes (between 2500-5300m) or extreme altitudes (5300-8800m), and people who are planning to either begin climbing or return to climbing after a longer break should have this check-up with a subsequent altitude consultation with a personalized plan.

Being an active climber myself and with further training over a period of several years at the BexMed (with a graduate diploma as “Doctor in Mountain Medicine”), I am pleased to be able to offer this service.
